Freedom

Freedom

Freedom by Adaobi Rachel

Give me freedom
Give me freedom!
My biggest fear is slavery
I stutter and I quiver
My hands tremble and voice too
My body shakes when fear sips in
From my foot to my head
to the strands of hair on my head.
It grabs hold of me
I gasp
for breath
for freedom!

I need to be heard
alas my voice too tiny, not even a mere echo
Do you have any idea?
What I am saying?

I am saying it is a dark force
It grabbed hold of me
just the night before the night before,
just the day before the day before
just the noon before the noon before

Have mercy upon me,
upon him,
set us free,
We are not warriors.
